McCarthy
Paul McCarthy was born in 1945 in Salt Lake City, USA. He studied at the University of Utah, Salt Lake City, the San Francisco Institute and the University of Southern California, Los Angeles. Paul McCarthy lives and works currently in Altadena, California. Paul McCarthy is considered today as one of the most important living artists. With his direct and confrontational approach he has an exceptional influence on a lot of young artists.
Paul McCarthy's video taped performances and provocative multimedia installations lampoon polite society, ridicule authority, and bombard the viewer with an overload of often sexually-tinged and violent imagery. Often McCarthy takes aim at cherished American myths and icons - Walt Disney, the Western and even the Modern artist. Absent or present, the human figure is a constant element in his work, whether in the form of bodies in action or satirical caricatures.
McCarthy's work was recently shown in important exhibitions in CCA Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts, San Francisco (2009), the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York (2008), Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst (SMAK), Ghent (2007 - 2008), Modern Museet, Stockholm. Paul McCarthy has participated in international events like the Berlin Biƫnnale (2006) and the Venice Biƫnnale (1993, 1999, 2001).
The number of Paul McCarthy prints is very limited.
